Pediatric Vascular Program
Minimally Invasive Treatments
Pediatric neurosurgeons provide the full breadth of surgical treatment for vascular disorders in pediatric patients, such as arteriovenous malformations, fistulas, aneurysms and moyamoya. In addition to open cranial surgeries, we have extensive experience with less invasive endovascular treatments, in which a catheter is threaded through the groin or wrist into the blood vessels of the brain. This allows for clearer pictures of the blood vessels of the brain (a cerebral angiogram) or abnormal blood vessels may be intentionally closed off in a procedure called embolization. For vascular lesions such as arteriovenous malformations, endovascular embolization may reduce bleeding during a subsequent open cranial surgery. In addition, endovascular embolization may be a treatment for patients with fistulas or aneurysms.
