Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital Appoints Khanh Nguyen, MD, as Chief of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery

Maria Fareri Children's Hospital, the children's hospital for the Hudson Valley and Fairfield County and a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth), recently appointed renowned cardiothoracic surgeon Khanh H. Nguyen, MD, as Chief of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery.

A national leader in pediatric cardiothoracic surgery, Dr. Nguyen will oversee the growth of the pediatric cardiac surgery program. Dr. Nguyen's mission is to provide the highest quality care to pediatric patients using the most innovative technology to offer the best outcomes.

Board certified in surgery, thoracic surgery and congenital heart surgery, Dr. Nguyen has extensive expertise in performing the most complex pediatric cardiac procedures with one of the highest success rates in New York State.

Dr. Nguyen pioneered a novel approach to traditional open heart surgery in infants and children using a transverse axillary incision that accesses the patient's heart through the side rather than by splitting the breastbone. Not only does the unique procedure leave a nearly invisible scar, but the approach also reduces the patient's recovery time significantly, sending children home as early as one day after heart surgery.

Prior to his recent appointment at Maria Fareri Children's Hospital, Dr. Nguyen served as Chief of Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. He has served as an attending surgeon at Maria Fareri Children's Hospital since 2006, and at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Paterson, New Jersey since 1997. He earned a medical degree from the University of California-Irvine, and completed a general surgery residency at Flushing Hospital Medical Center, a cardiothoracic surgery residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center and a pediatric cardiac surgery residency at the prestigious Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London.

Dr. Nguyen has a strong commitment to global health and frequently travels to foreign countries to participate in medical missions, often bringing colleagues along to provide care and participate in unique teambuilding experiences.

A resident of Tenafly, New Jersey, Dr. Nguyen plays classical guitar in his spare time. He is fluent in Vietnamese.
