Dr. Alpan is an attending neonatologist at the Regional Neonatal Center at Maria Fareri Children's Hospital, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth). He is also a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at New York Medical College, an academic affiliate of WMCHealth. His academic interests lie in cardiovascular and pulmonary physiology of the newborn.

Dr. Alpan is embarking on projects which utilize non-invasive methods of measuring and monitoring indices that reflect oxygen delivery to various tissues in neonates. One method, for example, is using NIRS (near-infrared spectroscopy) to measure tissue oxygenation in the brain, limb muscles, and intestines. There is very little data on blood flow in premature newborns because of their small size, and the hope is that these measurements, taken under various conditions, will provide data that will be important in clinical management. Thus, as an example, we would measure how different modes of ventilation, or different medications, effect how oxygen is delivered to various organs. Until now, such issues have been a matter of scientific speculation, rather than based on data. An example of a planned project is the study of how blood transfusions influence gut tissue oxygenation and whether administration of nitric oxide has beneficial effects.

Dr. Alpan also teaches research methodology and statistics to fellows training in neonatal medicine.
