Blood and Marrow Transplant
Our Blood and Marrow Transplantation (BMT) Program performs both autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplants. Our highly skilled, multidisciplinary team is dedicated to the therapeutic use of bone marrow, peripheral blood, cord blood and cellular therapy in the treatment of malignant, non-malignant, and serious blood-related disorders. Providers utilize personalized medicine, treating each patient as an individual. The BMT Program has the ability to provide full intensity, reduced intensity and reduced toxicity chemotherapy as part of the conditioning (aka chemotherapy) regimens prior to transplant.
Types of Bone Marrow Transplants
Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant
For some diseases, the patient’s own stem cells are removed and given back after receiving chemotherapy and/or radiation. This is known as an autologous transplant.
Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplant
For other diseases, patients cannot use their own stem cells for a transplant so they must use a donor, either related or unrelated. This is known as an allogenic transplant.
Related Donor Transplant
A related donor transplant utilizes a relative. Siblings are more likely to be a match for transplant, but parents can also be used as donors.
Matched Unrelated Donor Transplant
If you do not have a family member that is a match, an international search for a matched unrelated donor is performed through the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP). For more information about finding a donor (or becoming one), visit www.bethematch.org.
Haploidentical Stem Transplants
Haploidentical Stem Cell Transplants (half-matched family donor transplants) are sometimes used to broaden the donor pool and make it easier to find a donor.
Cord Blood Transplants
Some people choose to donate their infant’s umbilical cord blood at the time of birth. This cord blood is frozen and can be used for stem cell transplants.

Hematotherapy Department
As part of the Westchester Medical Center Cancer Center, the Hematotherapy Department provides outpatient transfusion and infusion services for both adult and pediatric hematology/oncology patients at Westchester Medical Center and Maria Fareri Children's Hospital. We provide personalized, high quality care for a large variety of malignancies including ALL, AML, CML, JMML, NHL, HL, MDS, MM, neuroblastoma, brain tumors, Wilms Tumor, germ cell tumors, sarcomas and more. Patients are treated with transfusion of blood and blood products and administrated chemotherapy and/or immunotherapy. We perform Autologous and Allogeneic Cellular Therapy collections as well as Mononuclear cell collections used to generate cytotoxic t-lymphocytes for the treatment of post transplantation infections. We are approved to treat patients with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and a variety of B-cell lymphomas with chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cells. Therapeutic Plasmapheresis is used to reduce donor specific antibodies. Extracorporeal Photopheresis is used for the treatment of acute and chronic Graft vs. Host Disease and CTCL.
Our Cellular Therapy program is fully accredited by NYDOH, FDA and FACT (Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy).
The Outpatient Hematotherapy Department has a total of six ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy/Immunotherapy certified RN staff who are qualified through training and experience in pediatric and adult care as well as apheresis, photopheresis and Cellular Therapy Collection processes. On-site medical supervision is provided by our team of Hematology/Oncology physicians under the direction of the program medical director.

Westchester Medical Center now offers FDA-approved CAR T-Cell Therapies that use your own immune system to fight certain types of cancer.
CAR T-cell therapy is a form of immunotherapy that involves using your own immune cells to fight your cancer. The specific immune cells (T-Cells) are isolated from the blood stream and genetically modified to produce new cells called chimeric antigen receptors (CARS) T-cells. Once these new CAR T-cells are reinfused back into the body, they are able to target and attack your cancer cells.
