What is bronchitis?

Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchial tubes, which are the airways in the lungs. There are several types of bronchitis, but the most common type in children is acute bronchitis.

Acute bronchitis is usually caused by a virus. It often develops after a cold or in children with allergies.

Symptoms

Common symptoms of bronchitis include:

• dry, non-productive cough
• runny nose
• sore throat
• slight fever
• chills
• muscle pain

Diagnosis

Bronchitis is usually diagnosed based on a physical examination and medical history.

Treatment

Most cases of acute bronchitis don’t need treatment beyond getting plenty of rest and drinking fluids. Symptoms generally last for one to two weeks.
